What does the Lord require of us?
A Micah Call to Prayer
As a global network whose members are present in diverse contexts, from many nations, tribes and tongues, including areas directly impacted, Micah Global affirms its solidarity with all civilians, families and communities, not just in the Middle East but in so many different nations at this time, suffering loss, displacement, fear and uncertainty.
Rooted in the guiding question of Micah 6:8 that names us; “What does the Lord require of us?” and committed to the values of justice, mercy, and humility, Micah Global urges for peace, a cessation of hostilities where possible; safe, unhindered humanitarian access to those in need; protection of civilians and essential services; and urgent care for the most vulnerable.
“In moments of escalating violence, our first response is to stand in solidarity with those who suffer,” said Christine Macmillan, Chair of Micah Global. “Our network includes members affected on multiple sides of these conflicts. For that reason, we approach this as a community committed to justice, mercy, and humility. We urge all parties to prioritise the protection of civilians and to pursue every opportunity to reduce harm and seek peace.”
“Conflict anywhere reverberates everywhere,” said Roshan Mendis, Global Director of Micah Global. “Our members are engaged in frontline humanitarian and pastoral responses across different regions. We recognise that members of our network are affected on all sides of the many conflicts; current and protracted. Micah’s solidarity is with human suffering itself. We are calling our global fellowship to prayer - for the wounded and bereaved, for displaced families, for humanitarian workers, and for wisdom for leaders seeking a path toward de-escalation, to a just and lasting peace.”
Our first response is pastoral: to lament, to stand in solidarity, and to pray for those who are fearful, injured, bereaved, or displaced. We renew our commitment to justice, mercy and humility.
Practically, we ask that our members prioritise whatever humanitarian and non-partisan action they can offer to protect life and dignity in all regions experiencing violence and instability, including the Middle East. We encourage all efforts that uphold justice and dignity, protecting the vulnerable and suffering with impartiality.
Finally, we invite our member churches, organisations and individuals, together with our partners and friends of Micah, to join us in prayer:
God of compassion and justice.
We lift before you all those whose lives are torn by conflict:
the children who cry in the night,
the families who have lost homes and loved ones,
the displaced who search for shelter,
and the sick who await care,
grant protection to civilians and humanitarian workers.
Soften hearts that cling to violence; give wisdom to leaders; and open pathways for ceasefire, negotiation and the practical delivery of aid.
Teach us to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly as we seek the welfare of our neighbours near and far.
Use us, in whatever small ways we can, to bring relief, hope, and healing.
Amen.
